Harishchandra Ghat is the less prestigious of the traditional burning grounds
1989 the government built an electric crematorium on the side of the Ganges. The goal being to reduce the amount of half-burned bodies floating down the river, cut down on air and water pollution and reduce the enormous amount of wood needed for the pyres. However technical snags trouble the operation since the beginning. In 2011 a major renovation was planned and since March 29, 2012 the crematorium is fully operational again.
There is also a commercial angle. The electric cremation is a threat to the wood merchant's business and they do their best to convince the mourning families that the modern way is inferior to the traditional cremation. Obviously with some success because since renovation only about 10 bodies per day were cremated, about 25% of the total capacity.
